Irish Guinness bread

Guinness Bread

A delicious and simple Irish Guinness bread recipe. This bread gets it molasses rich flavour from both the Guinness and from black treacle. It makes is great eaten with Irish stew, soups and chowders or simply slathered with some good butter.

Irish Guinness bread
Yields1 Serving
 225 g Whole meal flour
 75 g Plain flour
 50 g Porridge oats, plus extra for sprinkle on loaf before baking
 1 tsp fine sea salt
 2 tsp Bicarbonate of soda
 35 g butter
 50 g Runny honey
 50 g Treacle
 150 ml Guinness
 150 ml Buttermilk

Heat oven to 180°C /160°C fan. Grease a 2lb loaf tin with butter. add a tablespoon of plain flour to the tin and shake about until the greased sides and base of the tin are lightly coated with flour.

Add the butter, honey and treacle to a small jug and give a quick blast in the microwave. just until the butter has melted, then set aside to cool.

In a large mixing bowl combine the wholemeal flour, plain flour, oats, salt and bicarbonate of soda. Give a quick mix to disperse all the ingredients.

To the jug containing the melted butter, treacle and honey add the Guinness and buttermilk stir together. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry with a wooden spoon. Transfer the mixture into the prepared loaf tin. Sprinkle with oats and bake for 45 minutes. Allow to sit for a couple of moments in the tin after taking out of the oven before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
